Spotlight Interview: Lindsay Reinsmith, Founder & CEO Kaeng Raeng

Lindsay Reinsmith is the Founder and CEO of Kaeng Raeng, a leading creator of all natural, vegan dietary supplements and cosmetics made in the USA. We sat down with Lindsay to find out what drove her to build Kaeng Raeng (pronounced kang-rang, which means “be healthy, be strong” in the Thai language) and learn more about her own beauty routine.

Kaeng Raeng Interview

What inspired you to create Kaeng Raeng?

I created our original cleanse program because I was frustrated with the lack of affordable, healthy cleanse programs on the market.  Working in investment banking, my diet had taken a hit.  I felt like I needed to turn my life around.  I read Skinny Bitch, became vegan, and started doing raw vegan cleanses.  However, working 12 hours/day or more, it’s really hard to stick to a raw vegan diet, especially when co-workers are eating pizza and Chinese takeout around you.  I decided I need protein-heavy, nutrient-rich smoothies to keep me on track.  I couldn’t find what I was looking for on the market, so I started making my own smoothies.  When my co-workers noticed my improved skin, weight loss, and overall better mood, they asked if they could buy my smoothies from me.  My business was born!  Six years later, I’m continually inspired to produce our cleansing dietary supplements and cosmetics to improve the lives of busy men and women who are just like me: interested in getting health in a safe, natural way without breaking the bank!

The Kaeng Raeng cleanse and skincare products are all vegan, cruelty-free, and organic. Why was it so important for you to make your products this way?

We’re proud to be animal free and encourage our customers to take a short break out of their busy lives to reflect on their place in this great big world we live in.  Embracing a vegan lifestyle, even for just 3 days, or even just one part of your day, can make you feel closer to the earth and cleanse your soul, in addition to your body.  A truly great cleanse experience means one free from artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners, and preservatives so you can return your body to its cleanest, most organic state.

What inspires you when creating a new product?

Our customers are our top priority.  We listen to customer feedback and incorporate it into every product we create.  Each of our new products must stay true to our core values: natural, cruelty free, non-gmo, and accessible to people all over the world.  If an ingredient or process will make our product too expensive or out of reach for our customers, we don’t include it.  It’s also important for our products to be effective.  We do several rounds of product testing on volunteer participants.  If they don’t see good results, we re-formulate until they do.  Mediocre products will never be part of our brand.  And finally, our environment inspires us.  We’re proud to use locally-sourced ingredients with low carbon footprints.  As a small business, it’s important for us to reduce our contribution to climate change, one product at a time.

What’s your daily skincare regimen like? Is there one tip every woman should follow when it comes to skincare?

Here in Northern California, it’s perfectly normal (even expected!) that women do not wear makeup on a daily basis.  Coming from Texas, when I moved to the bay area in 2004, I was pretty shocked that women didn’t get “glam” to go to the grocery store.  And thank goodness for that!  I think not wearing makeup daily has honestly saved my skin.   I use a gentle handmade face wash (coming this fall from KR!) twice per day, and always after I work out.  In the evenings, I use our miraculous After Glow serum.  Don’t be afraid of oil-based products!  If you grew up in the 80’s and 90’s, you remember being bombarded with ads for “oil free” products, as if that was the secret to clear skin.   We now know that the harsh chemicals and preservatives found in traditional oil free skincare can do more havoc than good.  Our faces naturally produce oil; by limiting the oils in products and drying out your skin, your body will actually overcompensate by producing more oil.  Give your skin the nourishment it craves with an oil-based moisturizer in the evenings.

How do you practice beauty from the inside out?

What you put inside of your body is reflected on the outside of your body.  Certain foods we eat, such as dairy, naturally create inflammation and excess mucus production resulting in puffy eyes, dull skin and hair, and redness.  When we eat nutrient-rich foods high in vitamins, these vitamins enhance blood flow, improve color, and increase elasticity naturally.  You may have heard of the “vegan glow” – this is a real phenomenon and is a result of beta carotene literally giving your skin a golden hue.  By embracing a plant-based diet, even for a short period of time, you can see incredible improvements in your skin condition.

What do you love most about your body as it is right now?

I love that my body is nourished with plants instead of animal products.

As a busy entrepreneur, how do you keep yourself focused and also find time for yourself?

Honestly, I’m not very good at it, but I’m trying every day!  For my diet, it’s all about having control of your choices.  Don’t get stuck relying on a drive-thru or vending machine. Bringing your own lunch to work, even a Trader Joes ready-made salad, will save you thousands of calories per month.   When it comes to fitness, I always say to buddy up.  I have a weekly yoga date with a friend who I would likely not see if it weren’t for our scheduled hang-outs.  Working out alone may be your preference, but working out with someone else (or a group) keeps you accountable and more social.   And we all need a little “me” time.  I find this especially true for the moms in my life.  For me, practicing meditation, specifically mindfulness, keeps me grounded.  Mindfulness is the practice of focusing on your present situation and clearing your mind by not allowing it to “wander” or think of anything else other than what is going on right at that very moment.  While challenging, meditation provides me clarity, relaxation, and even inspiration.  I try to practice at least 30 minutes of mindfulness per day (especially when there’s no football on TV to watch!).
