I LOVE this time of year. The trees begin to change color, I unpack my winter sweaters, start to collect wood for the fireplace… OH WHO AM I KIDDING?! I live in Los Angeles where it’s been 100 degrees for most of the first two weeks of October. Gah! As the country cuddles up with blankets and mugs of pumpkin spiced EVERYTHING, here in SoCal I am more focused on planting drought resistant plants and conserving water than getting ready for winter.

So as the stores fill to the brim with Halloween candy and pumpkin spice lattes, you might feel the pull of sugar beckoning to you. But now is NOT the time to interrupt the habits you’ve created and sustained throughout the year just because the seasons are changing.
This is where spices come in. Today we’re going to enhance the flavor of your daily smoothie without adding the chemicals and other garbage you’ll find in store-bought “flavored” items.
I recently had the pleasure of attending a demo for the NutriBullet Rx, during which they made me a super tasty smoothie based on a survey of my lifestyle. I got the “anti-aging” smoothie… oh NutriBullet, you know me so well!
I was also given a unit to take home and try out. I was curious to see how it would match up with my beloved Vitamix. First, the variation in cup size is a great option to have — it comes with a single serving and larger family-friendly serving cups. The BEST part, however, is that once you place the cup (filled with your ingredients) on the base, it AUTOMATICALLY STARTS. There is no guesswork about which setting or for how long you need to run the unit. It automatically starts and is programmed to run for a 1-minute extraction cycle.
For me, as a busy working mom, this “leave it and forget it” function is a game changer. (Now if only it would do my dishes too.)
Pumpkin Pie Protein Smoothie
INGREDIENTS (the variation in amount of ingredients is based on whether this is a single serving or family-sized)
- 1 scoop of your favorite Protein Powder
- 1-2 bananas, frozen
- 1-2 cup frozen pineapple
- 1-2 cup frozen peach slices
- 1-4 cup pumpkin puree
- 1-4 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 1-2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1-4 tsp pumpkin pie spice
- 5-6 ice cubes
Place everything into the extractor and blend away!! (always be sure there is a bit of liquid in the extractor, like the Almond milk, before blending!)
