Finding Beauty in Aging

“Beauty appreciates, not depreciates. It grows, not fades. With age, I have developed a more nuanced understanding of what beauty really is. Beauty is not just something you are born with. Beauty is something you grow into.” – Cameron Diaz The Longevity Book

My thirty-third birthday is this month and this one is hitting me pretty hard for some reason. It could be because I have recently found some new grey hairs sprouting up and a couple extra laugh lines, who knows! I honestly feel twenty-five so I’m going with that. Regardless, since my birthday is around the corner I wanted to talk a little bit about aging because I know as women it’s something we all think about.

I love this quote from The Longevity Book, especially the first part talking about beauty appreciating. As we know, when we talk about money appreciating it means to grow or increase in value. I like to think of beauty in the same way, increasing in value. Have you thought about that? What you appreciate grows? What if we appreciated our own beauty and watched it grow? Think about how your day, your mindset, and your interactions with others would be different.

My intention for thirty-three is to focus on all the beauty on the inside and the outside. I want to focus on all the experiences I’ve had that make me unique. My energy and how I show up each and every day. How I treat others, most importantly myself, and ultimately what I contribute to this world.

You may have a hard time finding beauty in yourself. A good friend once told me the things we appreciate in other people are just a reflection of what’s already inside of us. I LOVE this, so I’m saying it back to you today. Notice the attributes you admire most in a role model or friend then appreciate that they’re already inside of you just waiting to grow and get better with age!

One way I’ve started to increase my appreciation is to go on a gratitude rampage. Yep, you heard me right. I find it most fun in the car or the shower but honestly you can do it washing dishes, changing diapers, you name it. Start out by saying one thing you appreciate about yourself, then another and another then you just eventually start appreciating everything… the clouds, the warm water, the smell of your soap, that you have hair, your legs helping you stand, or the car you’re driving, the list goes on and on. It may feel awkward at first and you may be done in a couple seconds, but I encourage you to try it on for size. You’d be surprised how much better you feel afterwards!

Lastly, I think we can all agree there is nothing more beautiful than someone who loves and embraces every part of who they are and that is exactly the kind of beauty I am appreciating in my own life this year. All the things that make me and I encourage you to do the same!
