Laurel Shaffer is the owner, formulator, plant communicator, loving center, and driving force behind Laurel Whole Plant Organics. As a fervent traveler, she often found there was void in clean beauty options at the spas she visited and made it her mission to create products that health-conscious consumers would be excited to experience. Read on for her favorite superfoods to help your skin with the transition to fall weather.
With summer coming to a close and the fall season rapidly approaching, the transition of hot summer nights to colder weather can wreak havoc on our bodies. During this transition our skin can use a little extra love and care. At Laurel Whole Plant Organics, we believe that purity and using the whole plants that nature provides instead of a piece of it is the best way to soothe, heal and nurture your skin.
Here are my favorite fall ingredients (think superfoods, but for your skin!) to look out for this season to keep your skin fresh, dewy and glowing all winter long:
This beautiful, gentle, healing botanical never ceases to capture our hearts. Due to the high mucilaginous compounds, it is incredibly soothing and anti-inflammatory. Like Hyaluronic Acid, Marshmallow Root helps to nourish, hydrate, protect and encourages skin cells to retain their own moisture. We source our Marshmallow root from an incredible Organic and Biodynamic farm in Sebastopol, CA which is only 46 miles from our studio.
Eat: Add marshmallow root to your tea.
Tamanu is a skin wonder and one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory plants that exists. It is healing and restorative for a number of skin ailments such as acne, scarring, eczema, age spots, sunburn, psoriasis and inflammation. Deeply moisturizing, Tamanu oil is perfect for the cooler months as it rebalances the skin’s natural biome and restores its natural luster.
Known in the wellness community for its unending benefits, Nettle is robust superfood for our skin too. It supplies a buffet of nutrients (carotenes, polysaccharides, chlorophyll, vitamins A,B,C,D,E and K, Amino Acids, and so much more) plus, it’s an astringent and anti-inflammatory that heals skin irritations and calms inflammation.
Eat: Add nettle to your tea, smoothies, or cook into a soup or pesto.
This hearty root aids in restoring your skin’s natural balance, increases blood flow and eliminates toxins that cause inflammation. Astragalus transports vital nutrients to and helps regenerate skin cells. A fun fact: It strengthens and lengthens our ‘telomeres’, which keeps our DNA healthy and delays the aging process.
Eat: Add astragalus powder to your water or tea.
